Exaggerated blood pressure (BP) response to exercise can be a risk factor for future hypertension and independent cardiovascular mortality factor. The purpose of this study was to define the factor that effect on early systolic blood pressure response to exercise.
We examined echocardiography data, BP, heart rate data and brachial ankle pulse wave velocity data from exercise test in 137 men and 98 women (mean age 58 ± 11, range, 19 to 83 years) from the Chungnam National University hospital, between 2004 and 2010.
On the regression analysis, increased LAVI (Left atrial volume index) is associated with early systolic blood pressure elevation in woman at BRUCE
protocol stage 1(R=0.438, p= 0.002) but, not associated in man. (R = 0.260, p= 0.206) PWV (pulse wave velocity) did not have association with early systolic blood pressure of both man and woman. Average maximal heart rate was decreased in order of atypical chest pain, stable angina and unstable angina (152,136,132 bpm). Difference of atypical chest pain and stable angina, atypical chest pain and unstable angina have a statistical significance (p=0.006, <0.001). In a group of decreased systolic BP during exercise, basal systolic BP was higher than in a group of increased Systolic BP during exercise. (7.9mmHg, p < 0.001)
Left atrial volume index and pulse wave velocity did not effect on early systolic blood pressure response to exercise. But in women, elevation of early systolic blood pressure during exercise is associated with left atrial volume index.
