In this paper, we propose a novel optical modulation scheme that combines the subcarrier intensity-modulation (SIM) with spatial modulation (SM) together for optical wireless communication in outdoor environment with the turbulence induced fading characteristics. The proposed SIM+SM scheme is compared to the conventional SIM scheme, since the conventional SIM has been proposed for atmospheric optical wireless communication links as it is more resilient to the turbulence induced fading. The results show that the proposed SIM+SM can outperform conventional SIM under the same spectral efficiencies, e.g. 2bits/s/Hz, 3bits/s/Hz, 4bits/s/Hz. As the spectral efficiency is 2bits/s/Hz, the proposed scheme outperforms conventional scheme by about 2dB, and when the spectral efficiency is increased to 3bits/s/Hz, the proposed scheme can outperform the conventional scheme by about 4.9dB, since the attenuation trend for the conventional SIM is more serious than the proposed SIM+SM as increasing the number of the subcarriers. Furthermore, for the atmospheric optical wireless communication link, the comparison of the both schemes will be also showed under different fading strengths e.g. the irradiance variance σl2 is 0.1, 0.3, or 0.5 in log-normal channel.
