This study intended to examine that fashion illustration of clothing studies has psychotherapy possibilities diagnosing internal psychology.
Main purposes of this study are to progress collage fashion illustration program and examine effects of characteristics and improvement of self-image in collage fashion illustration.
The subject of this research is 5 female students in university, majoring in fashion design, living in Busan, worrying about appearance, course, family environment, etc. and expecting psychotherapy. The tool of experiment was total 12 times of CFI program and the period of experiment was 1 hour once a week from Sep. 13, 2012 to Feb. 28, 2013. For the tool of measurement, Ego-Identity Scale and DAP were conducted so as to verify the effects of self-image improvement. For the method of analysis, form analysis and substance analysis were conducted for collage fashion illustration. For the sense of self-identity, statistical analyses such as average, ANOVA, t-test were conducted. Figure painting was analyzed by Oodomo''s criteria of personality test.
The results of this research are as follows.
First, psychological characteristics of 5 experimental subjects were examined. As the result, a sense of ego-identity showed significant differences among the experimental subjects. Especially, there were significant differences in independence, selfreceptiveness, future conviction and familiarness. A sense of ego-identity showed high selfreceptiveness and low initiative. In DAP, figure was expressed greatly, so there were sense of inadequacy and tendency of confidence lack through the self-assertion tendency and omission/hiding of hands. Therefore, 5 experimental subjects have strong confidence in themselves, but show psychological characteristics with insufficient performance by confidence lack. In this research, the size of figure is related with selfreceptiveness and hands are related to initiative.
Second, self-image of collage fashion illustration was examined. As the result, forms of collage fashion illustration are related to self-image of mental energy, lethargy, suppression, self-esteem, self-initiative tendency, etc. through the number of pieces, blank, achromatic color, tearing with hands, letter using, etc. Substance were related to self-image such as dependence, evasion, wariness, self-esteem, etc. through the feather and cotton, expression of knit material, facing of body and face to flank, jewelry, splendid makeup, expression of high heel, etc.
Third, the changes of self-image were examined by collage fashion illustration program. There were significant differences among the 5 experimental subjects in pre/post sense of ego-identity. All of them showed the increase of self-identity. Among the sub-factors of ego-identity, initiative, goal orientation and subjectivity were increased so much.
In pre/post changes of DAP, there were changes from omission of hands to expression of them, from weakness of line to its darkness, from stick and exchange of arms and legs to their division, non-pattern of clothes to butterfly and flower patterns of them. It means that self-image was changed from sense of inadequacy to sense of capacity and from introvert tendency to self-conviction and showed desire for accomplishment without defensive psychology. Therefore, self-esteem and active performance were improved by collage fashion illustration program and there were changed from negative self-image to positive self-image.
In conclusion, this research shows collage fashion illustration program has positive effects in the self-image expression of university students and its improvement. Also, fashion illustration has psychotherapy possibility. Therefore, if applying collage fashion illustration program to university students who experience self-problems and identity confusion, it will be the program contributing for the forming of positive self-image.
