Purpose : The aim of this study was to identify factors affecting the perception of sex life and sexual desire coping behavior among the spouseless elderly. Methods : The participants were 149 elders who resided in 6 administrative regions of B city. Data were collected from December 1, 2012 to March 3, 2013 using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson''s correlation coefficient, and Stepwise multiple regression in a PASW 18.0 program.
Results: The average perception of sex life score was 23.20±4.28, and the average sexual desire coping behavior score was 33.06±9.53, The controlled coping behavior score was 16.81±5.05, and the expressive coping behavior was 16.26±5.45. For perception of sex life statistically significant differences were found for gender, age, education, living together, children relationship, relation dating, sexuality. For sexual desire coping behavior statistically significant differences were found for gender, age, marital status, education, living together, cost of living, children relationship, relation dating, sexuality. Perception of sex life and sexual desire coping behavior (r=0.610, p<.001), perception of sex life and controlled coping behavior (r=0.459, p<.001), perception of sex life and expressive coping behavior (r=0.641, p<.001) were positively correlated. Influencing factors on the perception of sex life explained 35.9% of the variance in gender, relation dating, and living together. Influencing factors on sexual desire coping behavior explained 55.6% of the variance in relation dating, perception of sex life, gender, age, and living together. Influencing factors on controlled coping behavior explained 33.7% of the variance in gender, age, relation dating, living together, sexuality. Influencing factors on expressive coping behavior explained 61.2% of the variance in relation dating, perception of sex life, age, gender, living together, and education.
Conclusion : In conducting comprehensive sex health care education for healthy sex life of the elderly with no spouse, the approach considering gender and current dating status will be needed. Also, professional counseling needs to be provided for the elderly not dealing with their sexual desire properly despite their high awareness about sex life.
