In this paper, we proposed and developed an OSEK/VDX(Open Systems and their Interfaces for the Electronics in Motor Vehicles) OS(Operating System) and IDE(Integrated Development Environment) with new extended supports for reliability and real-time processing functions to facilitate application software development based on the OS. The proposed IDE tool is composed of the editing, project management, system generator tool related with OSEK/VDX OIL(OSEK Implementation Language). The original OSEK/VDX OS supports the efficient utilization of resource and the scheduling method based on event-driven for automotive control software and the preemptive multi-tasking scheduling policy but this OS standard has a lot of problem in terms of real-time processing and protection. In order to guarantee the real-time processing and solve the synchronization problems of many events, we applied schedule table functions included AUTOSAR standard to OSEK/VDX OS. The proposed schedule table method was tested in terms of the completed time of the execution task compared with the alarm method of OSEK/VDX standard. As a result of these tests, the alarm method is required a lot of overhead to search a expired alarm and has a constraint related with OSEK/VDX standard that a alarm has to match only a task. Therefore, the performance of schedule table method is better than that of the alarm method in terms of the completed time of execution task and memory requirements in proportion to the number of tasks. The proposed protection scheme consists of memory protection, hardware protection, service protection and timing protection functions and this supports to prevent system failure, or to localize the system errors. The proposed OSEK/VDX OS have been certified from external verification agency including these protection functions and schedule table method.
Therefore, the proposed OSEK/VDX software platform is well suited for developing time-critical and fault tolerant application software used for automotive parts and modules and this can be applied to various embedded system fields.
