A great attention has been paid on the coloring technology mimicking the structural colors of the living organisms such as morpho butterfly, peacock and isabellae longhorn beetles. In addition, the structural color based on photonic crystal has been studied in various fields such as displays and sensors. For this purpose, many researches on artificially fabricated photonic crystal has been developed in various fields. However, previously developed methods such as Top-down and Bottom-up have limitations to fabricate 3-dimensional photonic crystals in large scales without defection.
In this paper, comparing to top-down method, the progress of bottom up method is simple and takes advantages in economic aspect. By using self-assembly characteristic of colloidal particles, the experiment were conducted to fabricate photonic crystal having specified photonic band gap for mimicking structural color of living organisms. First, through dip-coating method, it revealed properties and problems of photonic crystal with structural color according to controlling major factors. there were several trial to make photonic crystal on large scale. Applied the characteristic, the experiment were performed to make complex structural color on a single substrate. Also, previously the performed experiment by dip-coating method faced a few difficulties of controlling thickness and defects. To solve these problems, the number of considered factors was minimized and fabricating progress was simplified. To be specific, photonic crystal was fabricated in limited inner space by using capillary force, gravitational force and evaporation. Additionally, photonic crystal having lower defects on large-scale was fabricated by applying centrifugal force.
