This study aims to understand the Maru as the process space through the concept of boundary as well as features of the Maru in the traditional housing construction style and to categorize these features to figure out the effects of these categorized features of the Maru for the modern reinterpretation of the Maru.

As for the traditional housing construction style, it is significantly stood out that the ondol and the Maru are integrated in a balanced structure. Thus, the character of the house is highly rely on what type of the Maru is arranged in which way. By connecting the Maru which is an open space with a room, a private space, it becomes possible to greate organic space. The Maru is a significant factor of the Korean traditional space design, which plays a critical role by connecting a room to a room, a room to the floor, or the inside to the outside. Therefore, it is necessary to take a look into features of the Maru as well as the space composition method which is generated by the Maru as the process space.

The goal of this study is to select the Korean traditional housing construction style and to analyze the categorization of features of the Maru based on the schematization of features and composition methods of spaces while focusing on the Maru as the process space. Also, this study aims to analyze the meaning and form of the Maru as the process space by analyzing the process space as the boundary space through the understanding of the concept of boundary. In addition, forms of the Maru revealed in Korean traditional housings have been studied to analyze and categorize its features to understand how the feature of the Maru influences the space composition.

For this study, 10 traditional residential architectures (Yangdong Seobaekdang, Yangdong Gwangwajung, Gwisan Kim Ki Ok resident, Haenam Yoon Doo Sun resident, Gangreung Sun Gyo Jang, Nonsan Myungjae resident, Kim Jung Hee resident, Gail Soogok resident, Namwon Mongsimjae, the resident of the main family of Yeonggwang Yeongan Kim), in the Joseon dynasty in 6 provinces including Gyeongsangbuk-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Chungcheongnam-do, Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do, and Gangwon-do have been selected for the analysis.
The scale of the analysis has been limited to the plane of the main house, but the scale should be enlarged to a detached house and the overall plane in the future study. Moreover, the attic was not included. Results of the analysis has been schematized and categorized to understand partial and overall features of the Maru.

In the chapter 1, the background and necessity for the study of the Maru as the process space through the concept of boundary in the Korean traditional residential architect are clearly indicated, and the scope and method of the analysis are selected. In addition, the analysis of the trend of previous studies is made to differentiate this study.

The chapter 2 supports the understanding of the concept of boundary with the theoretic consideration of boundary and establishes the concept of the process space based on them. Moreover, the form and meaning of the Maru are revealed and they are classified by the location and composition method for the suggestion of the basic frame for the analysis.

In the chapter 3, preliminary study on the Maru is made through the understanding of the concept of boundary and it is for securing information and knowledge about the Maru in depth before the analysis.

The chapter 4 is dedicated for the analysis of the Maru as the process space based on the frame suggested in the chapter 2. Also, the aforementioned traditional residential architectures are investigated and the Maru of main buildings are analyzed and schematized based on them to categorize features of the Maru based on their distribution.

As for the chapter 5, types of the Maru are classified based on the analysis made in the chapter 4 and distinctive features of each type of the Maru are drawn.

Also, the influence of the distinctive features of each type of the Maru on the space composition is investigated to understand how feature of the Maru can be varied by the combination method of these features. With the aforementioned data and analysis, the frame for the fundamental categorization of the Maru is suggested.
