The importance of transportation security and automation of containers is increasing with the increase of cargo traffic by containers. A number of vendors have developed some of them, such as e-Seal, SaviTrak, CSD.
Container Security Device(CSD)''s protocol was defined by U.S Department of Homeland Security(DHS) in 2007. CSD works inside containers and detects whether the door is open or closed and the status of container. When specific events arise, CSD records the information of the event. The recorded information is collected by CSD reader using RF wireless communication. CSD supports IEEE 802.15.4 standard on 2.4GHz for RF wireless communication.
However, CSD using IEEE 802.15.4 standard keeps the problems. First, 2.4GHz frequency is not suitable at port environment, because there are a lot of materials such as steel which can mitigate RF communication. Second, the process of network connection is complicated and a power consumption caused by idle listening is much. Third, the packet fragmentation arise, because IEEE 802.15.4 can transmit a maximum of 127 bytes but CSD protocol message has a maximum of 227bytes. Finally, the existing CSD doesn''t take account multihop communication, although the place where communication is not possible by onehop can be formed due to the environment of staking containers.
This thesis shows the design of CSD based on DASH7 Mode 2 to resolve these problems. 433MHz of DASH7 Mode 2 is suitable for port environment because of the characteristic of diffraction and penetration from 433MHz. The connectionless network of this thesis reduces power consumption and eliminates complicated process to connect network. Also this thesis shows the design of multihop communication that optimizes 2 hop communication in connectionless network.
For evaluation, we analysed the performance of CSD based on IEEE 802.15.4 and CSD based on DASH7 Mode 2. This shows CSD based on DASH7 Mode 2 reduces power consumption to 19%. Although the latency of CSD based on DASH7 Mode 2 increased by 28%, it has low power consumption when it has the same latency as the latency of CSD based on IEEE 802.15.4.
