Barrier islands formed in front of estuary have been influenced by tide and wave. Nakdong River estuary consists of unique delta system in Korea with barrier islands (Jinwoodo, Shinjado, and Doyodeung). Nakdong River estuary has changed in coastal topograph and sediment environment by human activity. As a result, we need to study long-term coastal morphology in barrier isalnds for coastline variation. We investigated the temporal and spatial variation of island geomorphology through compiling shoreline data for three barrier islands (Jinwoodo, Shinjado and Doyodeung) off the Nakdong River estuary. Shoreline data for the last three decades were assembled using the six sets of aerial photographs and the seven sets of satellite images. Canny Algorithm was applied to untreated images to obtain the wet-dry boundary which is considered as a proxy shoreline. Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS 4.0) was also used to estimate the rate of shoreline changes with five statistical variables (SCE, NSM, EPR, LRR, and LMS). West tail in Jinwoodo advanced (i.e., seaward or southward), west regressed, south advanced and east regressed. After 2000s, rate of shoreline changes increased and east advanced. Rate of shoreline changes are -2.5~6.7 m/yr. West in Shinjado advanced and east regressed like the counterclockwise movement. Since Shinjado was built like the present form, west becomes stable, but east regressed faster. Rate of shoreline changes are -16.0~12.0 m/yr. Doyodeung advanced at a rate of 31.5 m/yr. Since Doyodeung was built like the present form, south regressed at a rate of -18.2 m/yr, east and west advanced at a rate of 13.5~14.3 m/yr. Trend of shoreline changes has different in time and space.
