This study was conducted to analyze breeding strategy in relation to the clutch size and egg size of Vinous-throated Parrotbill in Yangseo-myon, Yangpeyong-gun, Gyeonggi-do from April to August 2012.
Clutch size seasonally declined and also in double-brooded pairs clutch size reduction was observed in the later breeding trial. Since food abundance decreased with season, parents would try to lessen the effort of brooding.
Egg size was influenced by the laying date. Egg size increased gradually with laying date and also grew bigger in the period of first and second peak of nests. It suggests that parents compensated nestling for decreasing food abundance.
Overall, clutch size declined while egg size increased seasonally. However, no significant relationship between clutch size and egg size detected. If females lay fewer eggs, it could allocate more nutrients to the eggs and make them bigger, but not extent to cause trade-off effect.
Egg size influenced hatchling body mass, but as nestlings grow up, relationship between egg size and nestling body weight diminished. It suggests that in early breeding season with abundant food, females lay smaller eggs with bigger clutch size, small hatchlings were born, and fed much more food than those born in the later breeding season.
Therefore, we conclude that female Vinous-throated parrotbills strategically adjust clutch size and egg size according to the environmental condition.
