최근 우리나라의 장법(葬法)이 매장위주에서 화장으로 변화하고 있다. 매장은 복잡한 절차와 과시적 행태로 인한 고비용을 초래할 뿐 아니라, 묘지부족 및 자연환경파괴 등의 문제를 발생시키기 때문이다. 또한, 인구의 증가와 산업화의 진척으로 토지의 효율적 활용이 중요해졌으며 도시화로 인해 조상 묘의 관리가 어렵게 되었기 때문에 매장보다는 화장을 선호하게 되었다. 더불어 화장 장려 운동이 확산됨에 따라 화장에 대한 인식이 변하게 되었고, 그 결과 2001년 38.5%의 불과했던 화장률이 2011년 71.7%까지 증가하였다.
또한, 2001년 장사등에관한법률이 시행되고 2007년 장사법 개정을 통해 각 자치단체에 화장시설 설치를 의무화 하였다. 그로 인해 2000년 이후 34개소가 증설되어 현재 53개소의 화장시설이 존재하고 있다.
기존에는 단일 화장장 또는 화장장과 봉안시설로 구성된 장묘시설들이 주를 이루었지만 부산영락공원의 건립 이후로 국내 주요도시에서는 화장장, 납골당, 장례식장이 복합화된 복합장묘시설의 형태로 나타나기 시작하였다. 그러나 복합장묘시설 설계 시 이용자의 정서를 고려하지 않고 건축가의 인식, 이론적 상식, 해외사례를 참조하여 지어졌기 때문에 현재 우리나라 복합장묘시설에서는 여러 문제점들이 발생하고 있다. 이는 복합장묘시설의 건립기본계획 또는 설계지침이 존재하지 않기 때문이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 그러므로 이러한 복합장묘시설에 관해 구체적이고 심도 깊은 건축 계획적 연구가 필요하다.

이에, 본 연구는 국내 복합장묘시설의 배치현황을 분석하여 특성 및 장단점을 파악함으로써 추후 계획될 복합장묘시설의 배치계획에 대한 기초자료로 활용하는데 그 목적을 두었다.
본 연구에서는 현재 운영 중이거나 2012년 말, 2013년 초 개장 예정인 복합장묘시설을 대상으로 배치도와 항공사진, 문헌조사를 통해 시설의 일반사항을 파악하였고, 이를 바탕으로 배치를 분석하였다. 조사대상의 배치현황은 모두 상이하기 때문에 객관적으로 분석하고자 위상학적 관계를 살펴보았고, 이를 이용자인 유가족과 성묘객의 이동 동선에 따라 복합장묘 시설의 동선을 유형화하여 그 특성을 분석하였다. 그리고 유가족과 성묘객이 주로 사용하는 시설인 화장시설과 봉안당에서 각각 다른 시설을 바라보았을 때의 차폐성에 관하여 3D 모델링과 현장답사를 통해 검토하였다. 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.

위와 같은 연구 과정을 통한 결과는 다음과 같다.
국내의 복합장묘시설은 위상학적 배치현황은 장례절차에 따른 배치 또는 화장시설을 대지 내에서 가장 안쪽에 배치하는 형태로 구분할 수 있다.
이용자 동선에 의한 분석을 통하여 시설의 배치현황을 유가족·성묘객 동선 분리형, 유가족·성묘객 동선 중첩형으로 유형화 할 수 있었다. 유가족·성묘객 동선 중첩형인 5개의 시설에서 유가족과 성묘객의 동선의 중첩으로 문제점이 발생하는 것으로 파악된다. 이에, 동선의 중첩으로 발생하는 혼란을 예방하기 위해서는 봉안시설을 화장시설, 장례식장과 분리하여 진입하도록 계획하는 유가족·성묘객 동선 분리형이 바람직한 것으로 판단된다.
복합장묘시설의 배치계획에 있어 유가족과 성묘객의 동선을 분리하는 계획뿐만 아니라 시각적인 차폐도 주요 요소로 판단되며 조사대상 9개 중 7개의 사례에서 자연요소인 지형을 활용한 자연적인 차폐 또는 건물의 배치, 형태를 통해 인공적인 시각적 차폐를 유도하여 계획된 것으로 파악된다. 따라서 각 시설 간, 특히 화장시설과 봉안시설 간의 시각적 차단을 위해 자연적 또는 인공적인 차폐방안은 반드시 필요한 것으로 파악되었다.
