As there is a growing desire among consumers for natural cosmetics, diverse research on active ingredients of cosmetics is under way. This study performed a survey of consumers'' preference for scrub products manufactured using Zizyphus Jujuba and fermented Zizyphus Jujuba by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In addition, the antioxidative activity of scrub product was also evaluated under in vitro and oxidative stress-induced cellular system. In the comparison of scrubs with different ratio of Zizyphus Jujuba powder, the scrub with 10% Zizyphus Jujuba powder showed the better positive results in terms of skin exfoliation effects, moisturizing effects, and overall acceptance than that with 2% Zizyphus Jujuba powder. Further, the investigation of customers'' preference for scrub product with Zizyphus Jujuba or the fermented Zizyphus Jujuba revealed the better preference on scrub with fermented Zizyphus Jujuba. The scrub containing the fermented Zizyphus Jujuba content of 10% was significantly superior to the one containing Zizyphus Jujuba in terms of viscosity, moisturizing effects, overall acceptance, and skin exfoliation effects. It, however, showed low preference in terms of fragrance; and so as a method for its improvement, a scrub product of fermented Zizyphus Jujuba to which yuzu powder was added was manufactured, and was subjected to the third consumer survey. As a result, it was found that the scrub product with yuzu power content of 5% was most preferred. The product showed the most significant differences in terms of fragrance, particle, overall acceptance, viscosity, skin exfoliation effects, and moisturizing effects. Moreover, in a consumer survey on an experimental product using the above product, it was found that the respondents were very positive in terms of the degree of skin irritation, product purchase intention, and overall satisfaction.
The measurement of the DPPH, ·OH and NO radical scavenging ability of ethanol extracts from scrub product showed that the scrub product of Zizyphus Jujuba to which the yuzu content of 5% was added was most effective, and particularly was most excellent in NO scavenging ability. As for cellular system also, it was found that the experimental product, that is, the scrub product with fermented Zizyphus Jujuba and the yuzu powder content of 5% was most excellent in inhibitory effects from oxidative stress induced by O2-, NO and ONOO-. Therefore, the scrub product with fermented Zizyphus Jujuba and yuzu would play the protective role against oxidative stress and aging in human skin by prevention of skin irritation caused by lipid peroxidation generated form free radicals. The present study indicated that the scrub product developed from this study will be applied very positively to skin care as a product that can fulfill consumer satisfaction and the functionality of natural cosmetics.
