Background: The coexistence of superficial dermatophyte infections of hands and feet is common and it is considered that the tinea pedis plays important role on the coexistence. While there have been many studies on that condition, only few studies was undertaken to determine the clinical and mycological features of tinea manus.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the variables related with tinea manus and to determine the correlation with other superficial dermatophyte infection.
Methods: Clinical and mycological features of 45 cases with tinea manus from the Catholic Skin Clinic from January 2011 to December 2011 were evaluated retrospectively.
Results: The male to female ratio was 2.5:1. The age distribution ranged from 14 to 81 years old. The involved hand was the right hand in 20 cases (44.4%), the left hand in 22 cases (48.9%), and both hands in 3 cases (6.7%). The involved site was the palm in 23 cases (51.1%), the dorsum in 12 cases (26.7%), and both in 10 cases (22.2%). Tinea manus was accompanied with other superficial dermatophyte infections, such as tinea pedis, tinea unguium, and tinea corporis in 35 cases (77.8%) and not in 10 cases (22.2%). The positive cultures in only tinea manus group were obtained in 8 cases and in 26 cases in tinea manus with other dermatophyte infection group. The most common isolated agent was Trichophyton rubrum in both groups.
Conclusion: The patients with only tinea manus tend to predilect the dorsum of hand and was relatively more caused by other fungus than Trichophyton ruburum when comparing with the patients with other dermatophytosis. It is considered to be due to the different route of infection and therefore careful history taking is needed.
