The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of overt/overt narcissism, self-control, and peer-vulgar slang use on the vulgar slang used by school-aged boys and girls. It based on the previous studies and related theories. The school-aged boys and girls vulgar slang was set as a dependent variable, and the individual related variable covert/overt narcissism, self-control and environmental related peer vulgar slang were set as independent variables.
The problems of this study were as followed :
1. Does the level of children covert/overt narcissism, self-control, peer vulgar slang use significantly influence on children’s vulgar slang use level? 2. How was the relative influence of covert/overt narcissism, self-control and peer vulgar slang use for the students’ vulgar slang use?
The subjects in this study were 519 children who had 5th, 6th grade student attending elementary school located in Daegu and Kyungbuk district.
In this study, fifth grade and six grade students (519 people) in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region were participated. The narcissism scale for children (Hong, Sang-Hwang, Gwak, Pyeong-Ho, Han, Tai-Hui, 2010)was used for the measurement of covert/overt narcissism, SCRS (Self-Control Rating Scale), which we modified and complemented as our research purpose, was used for the self-control (Kendall and Wilcox, 1979), and the peers’ vulgar slang use scale, which was made as referred to the study for abusive usage and purify measures in school (Yang, Myung-hee, Kang, Hui-Suk, Jo, Seung-Eun, 2011), and for abusive usage (So, Jae-Hee, 2011), was used for the vulgar slang use.
The collected data were analyzed by means of t-test, paired t-test, Pearson’s correlation, simple regression, multiple regressions, using SPSS Win 19.0
The results of the study were followed: First, the influence of children covert/overt narcissism on the children’s vulgar slang us: The higher level of the covert/overt narcissism, the higher use of vulgar slang, and boys were more influenced on the covert narcissism than girls, and girls were more influenced on the overt narcissism than boys. The influence of children self-control on the children’s vulgar slang use: From this study, it was concluded that the lower level of self-control, the higher use of vulgar slang for both boys and girls. The influence of children peer vulgar slang use on the children’s vulgar slang use: Also, in this research, for boys and girls, the higher use of vulgar slang, the more vulgar slang use. Fourth, the relative influence of covert/overt narcissism, self-control and peer vulgar slang use on children’s vulgar slang use: Both boys and girls were shown by the peer vulgar slang use. Boys showed the statistically significance for only self-control and peer vulgar slang use, but girls were significantly influenced by the overt narcissism, self-control, and peer vulgar slang use.
In conclusion, in order to control the vulgar slang use of the students, the improvement of self control for both boys and girls were needed, but the control of the vulgar slang use in class is more important. Meanwhile, girls, who has a character of overt narcissism, are needed the special management and particular care.
