This study aims to identify the need to accelerate design engineering disciplines as a convergence of design and engineering. The motivation stems from the relatively low awareness of design engineering in Korea compared to that in other countries. To address this issue, a transformable shopping cart for an autonomous mart-type vehicle is developed through additive manufacturing, using exploratory research as a form of inductive reasoning under a constructivist research philosophy. When problems are encountered during cart development by either the design- or engineering-specialized performer, a design-engineering-specialized performer intervenes in the implementation. The demand for accelerating design engineering disciplines is identified based on evidence of efficiency in the problem-solving approaches, processes, and outcomes demonstrated by design engineering-specialized performers.
