This study examines the acoustic environment of a university dormitory using computer simulations and explores noise reduction strategies through sound-absorptive design. An acoustic model was developed based on the dormitory’s actual material composition. To enhance the acoustic environment, reflective materials in common spaces and stairways were replaced with sound-absorbing materials, and the sound insulation performance of individual room doors was modified and evaluated through simulations. The results indicated that applying sound-absorbing materials to stairways and corridors significantly reduced overall noise levels in dormitory rooms. Notably, sound absorption in stairways proved more effective than in corridors. In corridors and refreshment rooms, ceiling absorption treatment was more effective than floor treatment. These findings highlight the potential of architectural modifications to improve dormitory acoustics. In particular, reducing noise levels in stairways where conversations and interactions frequently occur can minimize noise-induced disturbances and enhance privacy. Furthermore, future research should extend these sound-absorptive design strategies to other shared residential spaces, such as apartment complexes, to mitigate noise issues and improve overall living quality.
