The goal of this preliminary study is to investigate age-friendly renovations in public spaces to support broader residential community development, enhance project effectiveness, and provide both theoretical and practical guidance. Using a comprehensive evaluation framework, this paper analyzes two representative cases of older residential communities in Hangzhou, China: Cuiyuan No. 1 District and Hemu Community. Given China’s rapidly aging population, improving the living environments of older neighborhoods has become an urgent priority. The evaluation framework, developed based on World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and expert assessments, examines six key dimensions: Spatial Layout and Reachability, Age-Friendly Facility Configuration, Environmental Quality and Health, Safety Assurance and Emergency Response, Social Interaction and Cultural Activity Spaces, and Accessibility Design and Universality. By comparing renovation practices in these two communities, this study identifies both successes and areas for improvement. Findings indicate that while Cuiyuan demonstrates strengths in environmental upgrades and accessibility, Hemu excels in detailed facility adaptations and social spaces that foster elderly social interaction. Both cases underscore the importance of comprehensive planning and multi-stakeholder collaboration to create more age-friendly environments.
