Purpose: Recognizing the significance of mid-sized enterprises (MSEs) in economic growth as a whole, recently a number of governments and researchers have emphasized the necessity of the study on MSEs’ innovation capabilities as a key source of competitiveness. However, the existing studies on innovation capabilities of a firm are rarely analyzed at the level of MSEs. Especially, there are no comparative and empirical research to examine distinctive features of MSEs between Korea and China, despite the increasing level of active trade and relationship through Korea-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Research design, data, and methodology: To fill the gaps in the existing studies, this paper attempted to identify key factors influencing on MSEs’ innovation performance in light of Korean and Chinese contexts using existing references. And then we made a questionnaire, which was composed of three key factors [independent variables] - CEO’s innovation orientation, technological innovation capabilities and organizational competencies – and a dependent variable. Five-point scale was used for survey data and multiple regression analyses were used as a major methodology. Results: Three independent variables positively affect innovation performance in Korea, whereas an independent variable associated with organizational competencies has no effects on innovation performance in China. Likewise, government support has a moderating effect on the relationship between three independent variables and innovation performance in Korea, but there is no moderating effect between organizational competencies and innovation performance in China. Conclusion: Based on results, the CEO’s innovation orientation, technological innovation capabilities and organizational competencies positively affect innovation performance in Korea and China. However, there are some differences such as a moderating effect of government support between Korean and Chinese MSEs.
