Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the efforts of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for sustainable growth through global value chains. Through the case study of Sunyang Co., Ltd., this research examines how SMEs utilize global value chains. The aim is to provide insights into the participation of region-based SMEs in the global value chain. Research design, data, and methodology: This study focused on how Sunyang Soju Co., Ltd., a region-based SME in South Korea, leveraged the global value chain. We examined how Sunyang Soju overcame challenges and developed successful strategies to enhance nationwide brand recognition and make efforts for international expansion. For this empirical analysis, various data, including management materials from Sunyang and interviews with internal employees, were collected and organized. The findings were validated through prior research on global value chains. Results: The results of this study are as follows: Region-based SMEs have shown efforts to achieve co-prosperity not only by selling products but also by engaging in various social activities for the benefit of the local community. Additionally, participation in the global value chain has demonstrated various efforts to enter international markets. Sunyang Soju Co., Ltd. was able to participate in the global value chain by overcoming challenges related to innovation and risk management. This confirms the findings of previous research, which suggested that the upgrading of the global value chain occurs progressively. Implications: This study analyzed the strategies used by Sunyang Soju Co., Ltd., a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), to successfully enter overseas markets by leveraging the global value chain. The study suggests that SMEs should enhance their innovation and risk management capabilities through global value chains and promote long-term growth through a sustainable management model.
