Chinese academic circles have traditionally understood the Old Sushen (古肅愼), as mentioned in records prior to the Qin Dynasty, to be ancestrally linked with the Yilou, Wuji, and Malgal (Mohe). This perspective has led to the classification of the residents of the Northeastern Region of China under the so-called "Unitary Pedigree Theory." However, many Korean scholars and some Chinese academics have expressed skepticism about the direct lineage between the Old Sushen and other ethnic groups such as Yilou in the 3rd century. The perception of a succession relationship between Sushen and Yilou emerged during the 3rd century, eventually leading to the view that Sushen was another name for Yilou, which later became associated with Wuji and Malgal.
This paper investigates the changes in perception reflected in ancient literature and the process by which Yilou in the 3rd century came to be defined as a successor to the Old Sushen. It also examines how Yilou eventually came to be regarded as another name for Sushen. Although initially vague in the literature, 'Sushen' was recognized as a term for residents in the northeastern part of China by the end of the Later Han Dynasty. Due to various political considerations during the Cao Wei period, the perception that Sushen was a predecessor of Yilou began to take shape. Later, during the early Western Jin period, Sushen emerged as a recognized polity, and subsequent historical records explicitly identified Yilou as another name for Sushen.
