This study aims to examine the diversity of the political culture of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has long ruled Japan (since 1955), through the perceptions of two Prime Ministers, Shinzo Abe and Shigeru. Ishiba, and their beliefs about what Japan did abroad from the time of Meiji to World War II. As both were first appointed ministers in the 2000s, they competed three times in the LDP presidential election as political rivals.
A review of their writings reveals that Abe’s perception is that each country has its own recognition of history; that historical problems exist mainly between Japan and South Korea and Japan and China.; in contrast, Ishiba’s view is that Japan should learn from the history of South Korea, China, and Southeast Asia. Ishiba also sympathizes with the idea that the violence of civil wars in Japan from the Edo to Meiji period had been brought in from overseas.
Therefore, South Korea-Japan dialogue on historical recognition under Ishiba administration will likely be promoted.
