This study examines Johannes Itten's twelve-color wheel and its theoretical connection to music, delving into how his musical insights influenced his teachings and artistic works at Bauhaus. By analyzing these intersections, the paper aims to reassess Itten’s role as a pivotal figure in early 20th-century modernism, particularly within the Bauhaus movement’s interdisciplinary approaches to art and education. The research investigates historical precedents for the relationship between color and music, focusing on Newton’s mathematical ratios and Goethe’s psychological perspectives. These influences shaped Itten’s integration of music theory into color theory. The study further examines Itten’s writings and paintings to uncover his unique approach, which emphasized harmonic principles and the interplay of intervals, moving beyond simple one-to-one correlations between sound and color. Itten’s twelve-color wheel was informed by his deep understanding of classical and modern music. It posited that the harmony of colors corresponds to musical harmony. Rather than aligning each color with a specific musical note, his theory focused on the relationships and intervals between colors on the color wheel, akin to the harmonic principles in music. Notably, his inclusion of intervals considered dissonant in classical music yet harmonious in modern contexts, such as those found in Romanticism and Impressionism, reflects his sophisticated grasp of evolving harmonic frameworks. By situating Itten’s color theory within the larger discourse of music and avant-garde art, this study sheds light on the innovative and interdisciplinary nature of his pedagogy. It highlights Itten as a significant contributor to the Bauhaus movement and early modernism, offering valuable insights into how musical principles were visualized and applied to art. This reevaluation underscores the relevance of his theories in understanding the cross-disciplinary connections between visual and auditory experiences.
