This study explores the lived experiences of postmenopausal women, focusing on their perceptions of aging, physical appearance changes, and related identity reconstruction processes. Erikson's psychosocial development theory and the identity process theory (IPT) were utilized to examine how physical and social changes influence identity and self-esteem during the transition from middle to later adulthood. The qualitative analysis, based on in-depth phenomenological interviews with 13 women whose ages ranged from late 50s to early 70s, highlights the complex interplay of personal, social, and cultural factors shaping their experiences. The findings reveal that physical appearance management plays a critical role in helping women navigate the challenges of aging. Aging women use appearance-related behaviors, including skincare, fashion choices, and fitness routines to maintain self-esteem, reinforce identity, and adapt to evolving social roles. Positive attitudes toward appearance changes enable women to embrace aging and integrate new identities, whereas negative perceptions often lead to reduced self-confidence and identity conflicts. Furthermore, this study shows how aging women’s behaviors align with Erikson’s stages of “generativity vs. stagnation” and “integrity vs. despair,” progressing through identity identification, and identity adjustment, to ultimately achieve identity balance. This study contributes to the research on aging by emphasizing the importance of identity reconstruction and social role adaptation in enhancing psychological well-being among postmenopausal women. Its practical implications include developing targeted appearance-related products and counseling programs that support positive self-perceptions. This research underscores the need for holistic approaches that address the psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of aging, ultimately promoting improved quality of life for women navigating this critical life stage.
