Background : This study addresses the issue of digital archives, which primarily focus on recording and preserving analogue media, while digital media are relatively marginalised as archival objects. The aim of this study is to analyse the characteristics and limitations of existing digital archives and to coin the term 'Reverse-Archive' as an alternative approach to recording digital content, supported by case study analysis in publication.
Methods : The timeframe was defined as spanning from the 2010s to the present, as interest in digital archives began to emerge in South Korea around 2010. The focus is on the progression of existing digital archives, and instances of recording digital content onto analogue media. In developing the term of ‘Reverse-Archive’, an analysis of the discourse within relevant literature was conducted.
Results : The growth of web data, rapid software updates, and frequent changes in hardware storage have been identified as limitations of digital archives. This situation highlights the need for the ‘Reverse-Archive’. The term ‘Reverse-Archive’ denotes the practice and outcome of recording digital content onto analogue media as an alternative archival method. The following case studies, AI Weiwei’s Blog, R.I.P. FLASH, and The Spam Book, are presented to support and confirm the concept.
Conclusions : The ‘Reverse-Archive’ has the capability to provide an alternative archival methodology that addresses the limitations of traditional archival approaches. The examples of the archival practice in publication associated with the concept of the ‘Reverse-Archive’ demonstrate the feasibility of this approach.

연구배경 : 본 연구는 오늘날 범람하고 있는 디지털 아카이브가 대부분 아날로그 매체를 기록하고 보존하는 것에 치중된 데 반해 디지털 매체의 산물은 아카이브 실천이 다루는 대상 영역에서 상대적으로 소외되고 있다는 점을 문제로 주목했다. 이에 본 연구는 디지털 아카이브의 특성과 한계를 밝힌 후, 디지털 콘텐츠를 기록하기 위한 대안적 아카이브 실천으로서 ‘역-아카이브’ 개념과 내용을 제시하고, 구체적인 사례를 통해 그 가능성을 확인하는 데 목적을 두고 있다.
연구방법 : 시간적으로는 디지털 아카이브에 대한 논의가 국내에서 본격적으로 시작된 2010년대부터 현재까지, 내용적으로는 아카이브의 내용과 흐름, 그리고 디지털 콘텐츠를 아날로그 매체로 기록한 사례를 범위로 설정하고 있다. 역-아카이브를 정의하는 과정에서 관련 문헌의 담론 분석을 수행했다.
연구결과 : 웹 데이터의 증가, 급속하게 이루어지는 소프트웨어 업데이트, 하드웨어 저장 매체 환경의 변화는 디지털 아카이브의 한계점을 드러냈다. 이러한 상황은 역-아카이브의 필요성을 환기시킨다. 역-아카이브란 디지털 매체의 산물을 아날로그 매체에 기록하는 실천이자 그 결과물로, 대안적 아카이브의 가능성을 보여준다. 본 연구에서는 「아이웨이웨이 블로그: 에세이, 인터뷰, 디지털 외침들」, 「R.I.P. FLASH」, 「더 스팸 북」을 역-아카이브의 구체적인 사례로 제시했다.
결론 : 역-아카이브는 기존 아카이브의 문제를 보완하는 대안적 아카이브로서 가능성을 가지고 있었고, 최근 등장한 관련 아카이브 북 출판 사례들을 통해 그 구체적인 모습을 확인할 수 있었다.
