This work aims to develop a new characterization method for comparing the relative degree of crystalline (well-ordered) and amorphous (disordered) characters of wood cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), which will be utilized for developing non-breakable films with high toughness and optically transparent properties. The method involves correlating Graphene Quenching Raman Spectroscopy (GQRS) and Electrostatic Force Microscopy (EFM) results to evaluate the degree of relative amorphous and crystalline domains in CNFs level. The I(Amorphous)/I(Crystalline) value from GQRS is used for quantitatively evaluating the degree of relative crystalline and amorphous domains, while the EFM amplitude image is used to distinguish between relatively amorphous and amorphous CNFs based on their relative hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties, respectively. This work discovered an anti-correlation phenomenon between I(Amorphous)/I(Crystalline) values and the corresponding EFM tip amplitude results, which may provide significant clues for unraveling the different amounts of crystalline and amorphous domains among the wood CNFs by only using EFM results on the basis of the anti-correlated GQRS examination. Further studies will explore the applicability of this method to other types of CNFs and investigate the relationship between CNFs properties and their performance in various applications such as high sound absorption / insulation materials.
