The steel industry is a representative greenhouse gas emitting industry. The Paris Agreement was signed in 2015, imposing national obligations to reduce carbon emissions, and South Korea announced its plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to 2018 levels. The EU is planning to introduce a carbon border tax on major imported items such as steel, and carbon taxes are expected to be imposed from 2025. Reducing carbon emissions in the steel industry has become a very important issue that the country and companies must solve. The smart sensors is based on digital technology and deeply applied in each industry. The TDLS (tunable diode laser spectrometer) gas analysis system is based on digital technology and constitutes a control network system, with added features such as real-time data analysis and self-diagnosis, contributing to stable maintenance and process improvement. In this study, the reduction of carbon emissions in a steel plant was experimentally proven by comparing and analyzing the NDIR (non-dispersive infrared absorption) system and experimentally proven by comparing and analyzing the NDIR (non-dispersive infrared absorption) system and the smart sensor TDLS gas analysis system. This study confirms that digital transformation technologies are being applied to the steel industry, and these technologies have unique characteristics compared to previous technologies, with various applications possible in the steel industry, environment, and energy sectors. In particular, TDLS is a differentiated gas analysis system that solves the problems of existing infrared gas analysis methods and contributes to reducing carbon emissions. This study has significance in confirming the role of TDLS in reducing carbon emissions.
