The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2024 was awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their groundbreaking discovery of microRNAs (miRNAs). The miRNAs are a group of small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression. The discovery of miRNAs dates back to the early 1990s (Lee et al., 1993, Wightman et al., 1993), but the scientific community required many years to recognize their importance. The discovery by Ambros and Runkun changed our understanding of the regulation of gene expression significantly and revealed an entirely new layer of post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism. Although more than 30 years were required to award their initial finding with the 2024 Nobel Prize, it is noticeable that another RNA-based regulatory mechanism, RNA interference (RNAi), received the same prestigious award earlier (Fire et al., 1998). The back-to-back awarding of 2 closely related fields, thus RNAi in 2006 and miRNAs in 2024, highlights the deep impacts of non-coding RNA-based gene regulatory mechanisms and the long-lasting significance of this field.
