This study analyzes changes in apartment layout designs over time and examines the impact of the spatial distance between the entrance and living room on space functionality using the prospect-refuge theory. The linear layout from the early 2000s features a direct connection between the entrance and living room, offering an open view of the exterior and serving as a space for social interaction. In contrast, the L-shaped layout from the 2010s onward shows a functional separation between the entrance and living room, turning the living room into a private, family-oriented space. This research is significant in exploring how the arrangement of key spaces influences their functionality through the lens of prospect-refuge theory. However, the study’s limitations include the small sample size of analyzed layouts, making generalization difficult, and the inability to directly observe resident behavior, which limits the validity of the findings. Future studies should expand on these findings to improve reliability and applicability, providing foundational data for effective apartment layout designs.
