Marketization has seen rapid expansion in North Korea over the past three decades. Ordinary citizens have become increasingly reliant on the market in their daily economic lives. North Korean enterprises have also utilized a variety of informal economic practices for their production and survival. Economic reform measures have expanded the legal scope for market-related activities and thereby created a favorable environment for individuals and enterprises to pursue profit-oriented operations. North Korean economic reform can be understood in relation to the emergent state–market nexus whereby the government has sought to utilize existing market tendencies to support the state sector. This paper aims to better understand the dynamics of the informal economy, marketization and economic reform in North Korea, while examining evolving relations between the state and the market. The paper addresses the distinctive characteristics of informal economic activities and marketizing processes in North Korea. This examination helps to shed light on socio-economic transformation in North Korea and the implications of marketizing process and economic reform.
