The purpose of this study is to analyze Kenzaburo Oe’s only SF novel, The Tower of Healing, from a semiotic perspective by utilizing semantic tags and semantic web technology, focusing on interpreting it from the aspect of literary methodology.
In this study, semantic tags were employed as an analytical method to enable the automation of text structure analysis and database creation, confirming their usefulness in recategorizing genre characteristics. Additionally, semantic web technology was used to structure the story and discourse of the text, allowing the content and structure of the text to be processed as data. This provides researchers and readers with the ability to easily distinguish and understand the story and discourse within the analyzed text.
Through this shift in text analysis methodology, the researcher was able to construct representational semantic tags, which revealed that The Tower of Healing(治療塔) could be deconstructed from its generic framework as Oe’s only SF novel and re-evaluated as a text with potential to foresee posthumanism as a hybridized text. Lastly, this methodology was confirmed to enable new categorizations in digital humanities research.
