Most mechanical systems, particularly those involving motion, experience contact between surfaces, bearings, and various system components. Given that energy efficiency is a primary concern in engineering, reducing or controlling energy loss at contact areas can have widespread benefits. Laser surface texturing is a commonly employed technology to achieve this goal. In this research, we explore a novel approach to laser surface texturing by varying the internal shapes of surface patterns, specifically using cylindrical and conical designs. By adjusting various laser parameters to create these different internal shapes, we investigate their effects on aluminum alloy materials. To evaluate the performance of these internal shapes, the study conducts comparative tests of friction and wear characteristics using a tribometer, with a focus on bare, cylindrical, and conical surfaces. The results indicate that patterned surfaces, including cylindrical and conical, exhibit improved early friction and wear characteristics as compared with bare surfaces, which lack patterns. In addition, conical surfaces demonstrate superior friction and wear performance in the initial stages as compared with cylindrical surfaces and maintain a more stable friction coefficient throughout the testing session. Using the Archard equation to derive the wear coefficients for each case, the study finds that the bare surfaces have the highest wear coefficient, whereas the internally conical surfaces exhibit the lowest.
