Taekwondo has evolved from a fledging martial art to an Olympic sport in an incredibly short period of time. World Taekwondo (WT) is the governing body of Olympic Taekwondo, and it has aligned itself with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) peacebuilding goals. Having conducted peacebuilding efforts from the grassroots to the international levels, WT probably has had more successes than any sports organization. As WT has increasingly dedicated itself to the IOC’s philosophies and interests, peacebuilding has likewise become a part of WT’s brand. While WT’s sports diplomacy efforts have been discussed, WT has expanded its efforts and reseachers have not considered all of WT’s programs. This review paper is novel in that it examines significant Taekwondo diplomatic literature anew through a peacebuilding lens. It is thusly intended to establish a foundation for Taekwondo peacebuilding. The present paper is a logical continuation of academic studies on Taekwondo (sports) diplomacy, Taekwondo/martial arts studies, and peace studies academic fields. Our intended audiences are those involved in Taekwondo diplomacy directly or in a research capacity; Taekwondo/martial arts studies; and, sports diplomacy and peace studies.
