This paper presents the design and analysis of 5 kW permanent magnet assisted two-phase E-core stator Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) for electric three-wheeler applications. The motor specifications are established through vehicle dynamics. In accordance with this specification, the motor is designed and its performance is evaluated by using Simcenter MAGNET 2212.0 software. Subsequently, various core materials are examined for this design to pinpoint the material that yields best performance. The results indicate that the motor configuration with M19 material exhibits better torque and higher efficiency. Further, in this work the impact of horizontal and vertical orientation of magnets in a two-phase E-core stator SRM is analyzed, to emphasize the pros of permanent magnet assisted configuration for electric three-wheeler application. In addition, the influence of magnet materials on the performance of the motor is analyzed. Then, comparative analysis of E-core stator SRM with permanent magnet assisted E-core stator SRM is drawn for same torque. The analysis illustrates that the proposed design with horizontally oriented NdFeB magnet yields high average torque, torque density and efficiency. This can be a viable alternate for electric three-wheeler application.
