The physical properties and water resistance of UV/LED-curable gel formulations were tested by adding panthenol to a commercial base gel to find the best concentration of the active ingredient for functional gel nail development. The results showed that as the panthenol concentration increased, the gel's spreadability improved, although the differences were not statistically significant. Viscosity decreased at 1% panthenol compared to the control but increased again at 3% panthenol. Curing time significantly increased with higher panthenol concentrations, while hardness decreased. Both the control and P1 (1% panthenol) exhibited fast and stable curing behavior, maintaining consistent hardness despite prolonged curing times. In contrast, P3 (3% panthenol) showed reduced hardness as curing time increased. Gloss measurements indicated that P1 achieved the highest gloss level, followed by the control and P3, suggesting that a moderate panthenol concentration (1%) optimizes surface gloss. Water resistance tests revealed that higher panthenol concentrations led to increased water absorption and reduced waterproofing performance due to increased gel weight. These findings suggest that 1% panthenol provides an optimal balance of key physical properties, including spreadability, viscosity, curing time, hardness, gloss, and water resistance, making it suitable for functional gel nail formulations. This study offers foundational data for the development of advanced gel nail materials containing panthenol.
However, this study is limited to the physical properties of the gel nail formulation, and further research is needed on the effect of panthenol concentration on the release effect of the gel formulation in the future. Future research should explore the nutrient release characteristics and potential nail health benefits of panthenol-containing gels, contributing to the development of more effective and multifunctional gel nail products.
