This study aims to investigate whether the traditional elements of Princess Bokon's Hwallot patterns can be reinterpreted as contemporary design elements allowing them to be reproduced as images applicable to modern design through textile pattern development using the Archimedean Tiling technique. Furthermore, it seeks to evaluate the potential for modernization and the distinctiveness of the design. To achieve this, the study analyzes photographs of Princess Bokon’s Hwallot from the brochure Blooming Hwallot published by the National Palace Museum of Korea, along with physical samples, to identify the formative characteristics and symbolic meanings of the Hwallot patterns. These patterns, which reflect themes such as the prosperity of descendants, marital happiness, wealth, longevity, and wishes for affluence and abundance, were derived based on their symbolic significance. The empirical design development process was carried out in four stages: selecting patterns and extracting motifs, constructing repeats (geometric arrangement and basic area configuration), determining color schemes, and transforming the motifs into textile patterns. Specifically, motifs stylized from selected patterns based on the theme were arranged in regular polygons using eight semi-tiling techniques of Archimedean Tiling. A basic area was configured by additionally inserting polygons into the primary arrangement. The selected colors, extracted from the original Hwallot patterns, were applied to the base area in a color-repeat system, resulting in the development of 32 distinct textile patterns by horizontally shifting these repeats according to the pattern arrangement method. These developed textile patterns were then mapped into bags and sneaker designs to assess their potential for modernization and commercialization.
