This paper discusses how RE100 (Renewable Electricity 100%), which has recently attracted a lot of social attention, will affect a major industry including the HVAC-R industry and how the industry should prepare for this. The RE100 initiative is a voluntary global renewable energy initiative by companies that promise to use 100% of the electricity required by companies as electricity generated through renewable energy sources such as ‘solar, wind, geothermal power and etc’. The RE100 initiative was first launched at New York Climate Week in 2014 in association with The Climate Group, an international non-profit environmental organization, and CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), and started as an initiative to support the success of the 2014 Paris Agreement. Global companies such as Google, Apple, MS, BMW, and GM, as well as domestic big companies have recently expanded the use of renewable energy. In Korea, a plan to support the implementation of RE100 was prepared (’20.9) to promote the use of renewable energy by global companies and the voluntary use of renewable energy by domestic companies, has been issued so that it can be used for RE100 implementation and marketing. Recently, the government has announced “Establishment of RE100 industrial complex using renewable energy according to the Saemangeum green industrial complex development plan” as a hydrogen city promotion and expansion strategy. (’20.7). The hydrogen ecology formed in cities and industrial complexes naturally breaks down the boundaries between energy producers and consumers through the hydrogen energy platform, and the production, storage, utilization, and sharing of energy are achieved through the convergence of ICT technology, HVACR technology in buildings and energy infrastructure technology, thereby changing the future energy paradigm. We can expect that as more and more global RE100 companies want to increase the use of renewable electricity from suppliers in Korea, the government’s influence on the global market will inevitably diminish if it fails to supply renewable electricity at an appropriate price. Korea should provide a more competitive market environment for international RE100 participants and suppliers in achieving the 2050 carbon neutral goal.
