This study aims to examine the mediating effects of friendships and self-esteem on the relationship between self-presentation on social media and life satisfaction among individuals in their 20s in South Korea. Data were collected from 600 participants through EMBRAIN, an online survey research company, from January 11 to April 16, 2024. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS 27.0 and mediation analysis with SPSS PROCESS Macro Model 6.
The key findings of the study are as follows: First, relative deprivation was found to have a direct effect on suicide risk. Second, the higher the level of relative deprivation, the greater the degree of social isolation, and individuals who had more negative outlooks on the future experienced increased social isolation. Third, higher levels of self-presentation on social media, more positive perceptions of friendships, and higher levels of self-esteem were all positively associated with life satisfaction. In particular, self-presentation significantly influenced life satisfaction through the sequential mediation of friendships and self-esteem.This study contributes to the theoretical understanding of the potential mechanisms through which self-presentation on social media affects life satisfaction, providing practical insights for promoting healthy social media use and improving mental health.
