Discrepancies in the Duration of the COVID-19 Waves in South Korea, China, USA, UK, and Italy: A Scoping Review

An effective international response to COVID-19 requires countries to coordinate policies such as travel restrictions, border controls, and quarantine measures based on the duration of the epidemic periods. The purpose of this study was to determine any discrepancies in the reported duration of the COVID-19 epidemic periods in some selected countries. A scoping review was conducted between September and December 2022. Four databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, EMBASE, and the Cochrane database) were searched. All published peer-reviewed articles, and reports that stated the duration of COVID-19 waves were included. A total of 2179 records were screened, and 85 studies from five countries were included in the synthesis of results. The inter-rater reliability (κ ) for article screening was 0.87 (95% CI: 0.85 – 0.94), representing good alignment. The highest number of studies (27) was from Italy (31.8%). Of the remaining studies, 18 were from the UK (21.2%), and 16 were from South Korea (18.8%). The USA and China each had 12 studies, accounting for 14.1% of the total. A discrepancy rate of 100% was observed in all five countries. Although between-country standardization is difficult, Ministries of Health should consider national standardization of disease epidemic periods for a systematic, effective, equitable, and unified global health response, enhancing the management of health crises.
