Vietnam is experiencing one of the fastest aging rates in Asia, indicating that housing challenges for the elderly will likely escalate into significant social issues in the future. Conversely, South Korea has grappled with similar social challenges stemming from rapid economic growth and a surge in the elderly population since 1950, preceding Vietnam. Additionally, South Korea stands out in Asia as a country swiftly transitioning into an aging society and renowned for its advanced housing welfare for the elderly. Consequently, the study aims to scrutinize architectural planning perspectives of elderly nursing facilities in both South Korea and Vietnam, shedding light on the direction of welfare facilities for Vietnam's aging population. The methodology involved a literature review to construct an evaluation tool, case studies to assess existing conditions and suggest improvements, and field surveys at eight facilities in Busan, South Korea, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. These methods contribute to the evaluation of universal design by providing comprehensive data on various aspects of accessibility, usability, and inclusivity in built environments. The literature review helped identify key principles and guidelines of universal design, guiding the development of the evaluation tool. Case studies allowed for in-depth analysis of real-world examples, highlighting strengths and weaknesses in design implementations. Field surveys provided firsthand observations and feedback from diverse users, informing recommendations for enhancing universal design features. The results imply that adopting South Korea's evaluation criteria may enhance nursing facilities in Vietnam. Yet, achieving these advancements requires essential government-level support, such as implementing design guidelines specifically tailored for the elderly. Statistical analysis was employed, incorporating confidence intervals at 95%, standard deviations, means, and medians. Moreover, we observed that Korean elderly care facility designs prioritize considerations of user access, safety, and comfort compared to their Vietnamese counterparts. To address these disparities, future efforts should focus on tailoring Vietnam's elderly nursing facilities, taking cues from the diverse spatial planning methods utilized in Korea, as uncovered by our research.
