문화는 사회 집단과 관계된 전반적인 생활양식으로 감영문화 역시 감영과 관계된 모든 생활양식이 포함된다고 할 수 있다. 조선시대 지방관아는 감사의 업무공간인 감영과 수령들의 업무공간인 관아로 구분한다. 감영에는 외관직, 이서계층, 하급무관직, 관속들이 감사를 보좌하였다. 다양한 층위의 집단들이 운영하였던 감영문화의 이해를 위해서는 감영 구성원에 대한 이해가 수반되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 문헌자료, 선행연구 결과, 실증자료 분석을 통하여 평안감영의 구성원 중 통인의 개념과 역할, 역할에 따른 복식 차이를 살펴보았다. 향리 자제들 중에서 차출된 감영 통인은 관속의 범주에 속하지만, 일정 교육 후에는 이서계층으로 올라가기 때문에 관속보다 상위계층이라 할 수 있다. 교육은 통인훈장이 담당하였다. 이서계층의 통인은 영방 통인과 영인리 통인으로 구분하였고, 도내 향리들 중에서 차출되었다는 공통점은 있으나, 통인 영리라고도 하였던 영방 통인은 일정 기간 후 영리계층으로 올라갈 수 있는 신분이었다. 지인통인은 인신을 담당하였고 지통통인은 감영내에서 혹은 수령의 평가에 필요한 붓과 먹을 담당하였다. 승편과 원선자는 칙사의 대접시에 등장하던 기물로 통인이 담당하였다. 승편과 원선자통인은 주로 평안감사와 관련된 도상에서 확인되었는데, 절월, 교서, 유서와 달리 항시 감사 곁에 두는 것이 아닌 것으로 미루어 필요에 의해 사용되었거나 의례적으로 사용한 것으로 보았다. 통인 복식을 살펴보면, 영방 통인과 영인리 통인은 직령차림, 지인통인과 지통통인은 댕기머리에 협수와 전복 차림, 승편과 원선자 통인은 홍색 또는 담홍색 철릭에 흑색 또는 청색의 대를 두르고 댕기머리에 자주댕기를 하고 총모자 차림을 하였다.

If culture is the overall lifestyle related to a social group, the Gamyeong culture can also be said to include all lifestyles related to the Gamyeong. The local government in the Joseon Dynasty were divided into the Gamyeong and the Gwana. In Gamyeong, there were the external officials, the Iseo class consisting of Yeongri and Yeonginri, the lower-level military officials, and the Gwansok to assist the Gamsa. In order to understand the Gamyeong culture, an understanding of Gamyeong members must be included. In this study, the concept of Gamyeong-tongin, its role, and the differences in costumes according to the role were examined by referring to literature data, the previous research results, and the empirical data analysis. The Gamyeong-tongin, selected from among the children of Hyangri, belong to the category of Gwansok, but they can be said to be a higher class than the Gwansok because they can move up to the Iseo class after receiving a certain level of education. The tongin of the Iseo class are divided into the Yeongbang-tongin and the Yeonginri-tongin. They were selected from among the Hyangri. However, the Yeongbang-tongin, also called a Tongin-yeongri, was a status that could be promoted to the Yeongri-class after a certain period of time. The Jiin-tongin was in charge of the Insin during the officials` procession. and the Jitong-tongin was in charge of the brushes and meok that were used within the Gamyeong or when evaluating the local officials. The Seungpyeon and Wonseonja were items that appeared when entertaining royal envoys and were in charge of the tongin, and the Seungpyeon was also included in the items requested by the Japanese. The Seungpyeon-tongin and Wonseonja-tongin were mainly identified in paintings related to the Pyeongan-gamsa. Looking at the tongin costumes according to their roles, the Yeongbang-tongin and Yeonginri-tongin wore the Jikryeong, and the Jiin-tongin and Jitong-tongin wore the purple daenggi on their daeng-gimeori with the Hyeobsu and Jeonbok. The Seungpyeon-tongin and Wonseonja-tongin wore the red or damhongsaek Cheolrik with the black or blue belt, the purple daenggi on their daeng-gimeori, and the Chongmoja.
