In this study, single- and multi-layer PVD(Physical Vapor Deposition) coatings were applied to HSS(High-Speed Steel) and carbide drills to achieve high-efficiency and high-quality drilling. The cutting performance was evaluated based on the type of PVD coating and changes in the cutting conditions for SKD11 and SCM4 materials, which are widely used in automotive and mold industries. The test results indicated that for HSS drills, the single-layer futura nanocoating exhibited better performance than the multi-layer futura coatings of TiN and TiAlN. Additionally, among the single-layer TiN, TiCNN, and TiCN coatings, the TiCNN coating exhibited more than double the performance of the other coatings. In carbide drill machining, the use of a cutting fluid resulted in a drill life that was more than nine times longer than that when machining without a cutting fluid. Testing of multilayer PVD-coated carbide drills of TiCN, TiN, and TiAlN and single-layer TiN and TiCNN coatings on SCM4 material indicated that the TiN single-layer coating performed the best. Furthermore, increasing the cutting speed of the TiN single-layer coated drill from 50 to 80 m/min resulted in a drill life reduced to half, indicating that an increase in the cutting speed directly affects the tool life of coated drills.
