본 연구는 MZ세대가 애용하는 글로벌 OTT 플랫폼 중 가장 영향력 있는 넷플릭스에서 극적인 스토리텔링과 이미지로 표현되고 있는 드라마 형식의 스핀오프 작품인 <웬즈데이(Wednesday)>에 표현된 현대 고스 스타일에 대해 분석해 보고자 한다. <웬즈데이>는 <아담스 패밀리(The Addams Family)>의 스핀 오프 드라마이므로 본 연구에서는 기존 영화 미디어에서 표현된 고스 스타일과 넷플릭스에 나타난 고스 스타일을 비교 분석하고자 한다. 이를 통해 뉴미디어인 넷플릭스에서의 영상 미디어에 표현된 패션·뷰티 디자인 연구의 기초자료 제공과 이러한 영상 미디어에서 패션·뷰티 스타일링을 제안할 때 가이드 라인을 제공하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 연구 결과 오늘날의 고스 스타일은 과거의 고스 스타일을 현대적으로 재해석하며, 과거 고스 스타일에 비해 캐주얼하고 모던한 패션과 뷰티를 보여주었다. 특히 대표적인 뉴미디어인 OTT 플랫폼의 주 고객층인 MZ 세대의 고스 스타일은 현대 패션 트렌드와 결합하여, 전통적인 고스 스타일의 요소를 유지하면서도 현대적인 세련미를 더하는 것이 특징이다. 첫째, 고스 패션 스타일은 검은색 옷과 레이스, 가죽 등의 고스 패션의 전형적인 소재를 사용하면서도, 현대적인 실루엣과 디테일을 채택하고, 실용적이고 편안한 디자인과 아이템을 선호하며, 스트리트 웨어와 같은 다른 패션 트렌드를 통합하기도 한다. 고스 스타일의 특성 중에 암흑성은 다른 사람들과의 차별성을 주는 일관성 있는 검은색 옷을 착용함으로서 전통적인 고스 스타일의 특성을 유지하였다. 하지만 그로테스크한 이미지를 통한 위압감은 보이지 않아 과거의 고스 스타일과 차이를 보였다. 낭만성은 역사성을 강조한 화려한 디자인과 섬세한 디테일 보다는 심플한 디자인과 디테일의 생략이 많이 나타났다. 관능성은 바디 실루엣을 강조한 과거와 달리 박시한 실루엣과 길이가 길고 통이 넓은 원피스와 바지를 착용하였다. 유희성은 플라워, 체크, 스트라이프 패턴 활용과 다양한 레이어드 록을 통해 보여줬다. 둘째, 고스 뷰티 스타일은 고스 스타일의 대표적인 요소인 어두운 분위기를 유지하면서도, 과거의 복잡하고 과장된 스타일보다는 심플하고 자연스러운 스타일을 선호하였다. 고스 스타일의 특성 중에 암흑성은 창백한 피부, 퀭한 눈가와 어두운 다크써클, 생기 없는 입술, 검은색 헤어를 통해 나타났고 전통적인 고스 스타일의 특징을 유지하였다. 낭만성은 특수한 상황에서 평소와 달리 진한 메이크업과 포멀한 업스타일을 연출하여 드러냈다. 관능성은 갈고 풍성한 속눈썹과 눈이 깊어 보이는 세미 스모키 아이 메이크업을 통해 나타났다. 유희성은 주근깨가 드러나는 자연스러운 피부와 시스루 앞머리를 통해서 나타났다. 이러한 변화는 고스 스타일이 현대 사회와 MZ 세대의 취향에 맞춰 변화하고 발전하고 있음을 보여주며, 이는 고스 스타일이 단순히 과거의 스타일을 고집하는 것이 아니라, 시대의 흐름과 소비자의 취향에 맞춰 유연하게 변화할 수 있는 스타일임을 잘 보여준다. 이와 같이, 현대의 고스 스타일은 기본적인 미학과 가치관을 유지하면서도, 시대와 문화에 따라 계속 변화하고 적응하는 유연성을 보여주었다. 이러한 유연성은 고스 스타일이 다양한 패션 트렌드와 미디어, 그리고 사회적 변화를 반영하고 통합할 수 있게 해주며, 이를 통해 고스 스타일은 계속해서 발전하고 새로워질 수 있다. 따라서, 미래의 고스 스타일은 현재의 트렌드를 계승하면서도, 더욱 다양하고 창조적인 방식으로 고스 스타일의 미학과 가치관을 표현할 것으로 기대된다.

This study aims to analyze the contemporary goth style expressed in "Wednesday," a spin-off drama of "The Addams Family," through dramatic storytelling and imagery on Netflix, one of the most influential global OTT platforms favored by the MZ generation. Since "Wednesday" is a spin-off drama of "The Addams Family," this study will compare and analyze the gothic style expressed in traditional film media with the gothic style expressed on Netflix drama. This study will provide a foundation for the study of fashion and beauty design expressed in the new media, Netflix, and provide guidelines for proposing fashion and beauty styling in such media. The results of the study showed that today's goth style is a modern reinterpretation of the goth style of the past, showing casual and modern fashion and beauty compared to the goth style of the past. In particular, the goth style of the MZ generation, which is the main customer base of OTT platforms, a representative new media, is characterized by combining modern fashion trends and adding modern sophistication while maintaining elements of traditional goth style. First, goth fashion style uses black clothing and materials typical of goth fashion, such as lace and leather, but also adopts modern silhouettes and details, favors practical and comfortable designs and items, and incorporates other fashion trends such as streetswear. Among the characteristics of the goth style, darkness has remained a traditional characteristic of the goth style by wearing consistent black clothing that sets them apart from others. However, there is no sense of intimidation through grotesque imagery, which distinguishes it from past goth styles. Romanticism was characterized by simple designs and a lack of detail, rather than the ornate designs and intricate details that emphasized history. Sensuality was characterized by boxy silhouettes and long, wide-legged dresses and pants, unlike the past, which emphasized the body silhouette. Playfulness was shown through the use of floral, check, and striped patterns and a variety of layered looks. Secondly, goth beauty style maintained the dark atmosphere that is a typical element of goth style, but favored simple and natural styles rather than the complicated and exaggerated styles of the past. Among the characteristics of goth style, darkness was shown through pale skin, hollow eyes and dark circles, lifeless lips, and black hair, maintaining the traditional features of goth style. Romanticism was expressed through the use of heavy makeup and formal for special occasions. Sensuality was expressed through semi-smoky eye makeup with long, full lashes and deep eyes. Playfulness was expressed through natural skin with freckles and see-through bangs. These changes show that goth style is changing and evolving to meet the needs of modern society and the tastes of Generation MZ, which demonstrates that goth style is not just about sticking to a style from the past, but is flexible enough to change with the times and consumer preferences. As such, modern goth style has demonstrated the flexibility to continue to change and adapt with the times and culture, while maintaining its basic aesthetics and values. This flexibility allows the style to reflect and incorporate various fashion trends, media, and social changes, which allows it to continue to evolve and renew itself. Therefore, it is expected that the future of goth style will inherit current trends, but also express the aesthetics and values of goth style in more diverse and creative ways.
