This paper systematically analyzes the emergence of material-oriented design processes in contemporary architecture,with a specific focus on the interaction between materials and digital technology. The study employs theoretical concepts ofemergence to understand the interplay between material-oriented design and digital technology. The research primarilyinvestigates the application of digital technology in modern archit]ecture, with a special emphasis on case studies of architectslike Gramazio Kohler, Achim Menges, and Neri Oxman. The analysis aims to uncover how the interplay of digital technologyand material properties results in the emergence of new characteristics. By delving deep into these case studies, the researchillustrates and systematizes the impact of digital technology on the distinct characteristics of material-oriented design. Material-oriented design adopts a bottom-up approach, expanding the interaction between the overall design and the materialproperties of its components, thereby creating innovative design possibilities. Digital technologies act as catalysts for diversifyingthe expression of emergent features in material-oriented design. Ultimately, this research provides a foundational understandingof the principles and framework of relationship with material-oriented design and concept of emergence.
