The number of cemetery architecture in the world has been increased. The San Catalo Cemetery designed by AldoRossi and the Igualada Cemetery by Enric Miralles marked an important turning point in the history of cemetery architecture. This study aims to compare and contrast the two architects’ different concepts of time, memory, death and how they spatializedthem. Rossi shows a perpetual concept of time for the archetype. The spaces he designed aim to become monuments ofcities. Miralles' time, on the other hand, is reality as a flowing and changing process. Architecture is a metaphor for theconcept of time and is at the center of its own transformation. In Rossi's architecture, memory is an evoked memory. ForMiralles, memory itself is alive with the experience of the architectural space. Rossi's architecture is strongly characterized bycontaining the dead. The mode of memorialization that Rossi proposes is nothing less than an expression of the will totranscend time and space. In Miralles’ cemetery, on the other hand, the architecture itself is in a cycle of life and death. Themausoleum, which houses the dead, becomes another piece of land, giving back to the nature. This comparison of twoarchitects and two cemetery projects reveals fundamentally different ideas about time, memory, and death. It is hoped that thisstudy can help to explore these universal issues.
