Cucurbituril is a macrocyclic compound that can form host-guest complexes through hydrophobic interactions and ion-dipole interactions to encapsulate active substances. This is known to be capable of directly encapsulating guest substances as a host, thereby increasing the stability of active substances or regulating their release. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) consist of organic ligands and metal ions. It is a porous crystalline material and capable of encapsulating various molecules. The pore size can be adjusted by modifying the framework or composition of the metal-organic ligands, making them useful in drug delivery, catalysis, and other fields. Retinal, also known as retinaldehyde, is an oxidized form of retinol. It is known for its efficacy in improving photoaging, providing antioxidant benefits, and reducing wrinkles, making it a popular ingredient in cosmetics. However, it is unstable when exposed to external factors such as oxygen, light, and heat, necessitating research for its stabilization. In this study, a Cucurbituril-based MOF was formed to stabilize retinal, and retinal was encapsulated within this framework. Analysis was conducted using SEM, XRD, and FT-IR, confirming that the metal-organic framework based on cucurbituril maintained its structure even after retinal encapsulation. ¹H NMR analysis confirmed the encapsulation of retinal within Cucurbituril-based MOF, and HPLC analysis showed that the encapsulated retinal remained stable after three months. This demonstrates that cucurbituril-based MOF can stably protect substances that are unstable in external environments. Additionally, it suggests that this system can function as a skin delivery system, allowing the stable use of unstable active substances like retinal and retinol in the cosmetics field.
