In this essay, I explore the hybridization phenomenon of phygital art that crosses the boundary between material and immaterial arts. Phygital art has been discussed in the global art world for a while and has emerged as an alternative to NFT art and a reconsideration of digital art. Phygital art is a concept that exists in an encrypted state on the network yet is hybridized with fluidity and can be converted to physical work at any time. To understand the hybrid nature of phygital art, I research the work of Damien Hirst and Frank Stella and their experimental process around the boundary of materialimmaterial work. I also explore the possibility of encrypted digital art moving back and forth into the real world. However, problems in the hybridization process risk causing legal issues with the authorship of art. Going one step further, I research performance, which exists as a non-material object in reality, and its hybridization through the case of Marina Abramović. Amid the development of cutting-edge science and technology, we examine in detail the phenomenon of de-embodiment and re-embodiment of performance and the fluid process of how non-material performances are re-materialized with public meaning in virtuality. It is essential to look at the hybridization phenomenon of physical performance and the public nature resulting from the belated nature of digital performance. In other words, it is about how an immaterial virtual performance can function as public art with social meaning in the materialized realm through active viewers. Therefore, I hope this study will provide a critical perspective in examining the hybridization phenomenon of phygital art that challenges new artistic paradigms, from NFT to performance.
