The term Gaehwa, which refers to the movement to communicate with the world during the challenging opening period marked by internal and external crises, has come to hold a positive image in popular perception. In addition, the Gaehwapa also has a high recognition as the reform agent of the time to move to a new world. And on the other side of the positive image of Gaehwa, there are negative images of Sugu and Cheoksa. This confrontation structure between Gaehwa and Cheoksa has been delivered to students in the educational field through Korean history textbooks from liberation to the present. In this basic framework, the Gaehwapa was evaluated as the first to open their eyes to modern consciousness and to build an independent country. However, the criterion for positive evaluation of the enlightenment group is whether or not a Western-style modernity was pursued. From the perspective of the enlightenment group as the agent of reform in Korea during the modern transition period, the simple standard of Western-style modernity is exerting strong power. These standards not only created the hierarchy of enlightenment and reflection, but also the hierarchy of the radical enlightenment and the moderate enlightenment, which are the detailed classifications of the enlightenment group. In the current high school Korean history textbook, it remains in the narrative that gives the radical enlightenment group an upper hand in trying to escape the traditional order based on its position on the Qing. The Gapsin Coup caused by the radical enlightenment group is directly linked to the keywords of ‘modernity’, ‘innovation’, and ‘reform’. Interest in the radical enlightenment group in the field of education is evident from the current concentration of thesis topics in Graduate Schools of Education. However, it is necessary to reconsider whether the interest of the reformer in Korea in the late 19th century was solely on following the Western modern era. Park Kyu-soo, called the father of the enlightenment group, was not to move beyond the old Joseon society and into a new Western modern society. In addition, the description of the textbook that the human lineage of the enlightenment group led from Park Kyu-soo to the subsequent generations of the enlightenment group, such as Kim Ok-gyun and Yoo Gil-jun, is different from the facts of the time. It is necessary to immediately view the agent of reform of Korean history during the late 19th century and reconsider the contents of the textbook based on it.
