In this article, a comprehensive five-year project that commenced in 2019 and concluded in 2023, focusing on Korean women independence activists, is presented as a significant endeavor in the realm of “Public History.” The article also encompasses the author’s recommendations on how to further the project’s achievements and provides a broader perspective on Women’s Public History.
This five-year project, dedicated to Korean women independence activists, was conceptualized as part of the “Doing History, with the Public, and for the Public” initiative by “The History Factory (HIATOFACTO),” established by the Research Popularization Group of The Organization of Korean Historians. Each year of the project was centered around distinct themes, including 〈Women Who Led the March 1st Movement〉, 〈Women Independence Activists and the Anti-Japanese Armed Resistance〉, 〈Domestic Social Movements and Women Independence Activists〉, 〈Korean Communities Abroad and Women Independence Activists〉, and 〈Women’s Institutions and the Independence Movement〉.
Prior research methods and approaches that were usually featured in Women history studies or historical studies of Woman movements, as well as other methods and perspectives normally utilized in historical studies of the Korea Anti-Japanese Independence movement, were both employed by members of the project in a truly intertwined and merged fashion. The aim of the project was not to put these women independence activists on a high pedestal in the name of Korean state and people, but to review their lives as human females who lived through a turbulent time.
Results of this project were not only published through five volumes of books, as they were shared also with the public through a variety of programs, which included public lectures, publication of special books meant for visually impaired, workshops (ex. the Yu Gwan-sun Torch Prize Workshop), and recitative play.
And finally, regarding prospects and future tasks the author suggested the following four issues: First, a proper direction should be set, as Korean modern history of Women Independence movements must be defined, established and expanded as a case of Women’s Public history. Second, a systemic archive containing all relevant data on the Women Independence movement would have to be designed and constructed. Third, research methods for the topic should be even more diversified. And Fourth, a platform of social governance, which could support and sustain Women’s Public history research, should be duly established in the future.
