This study aims to explore how contemporary art photography incorporates the concept of ‘ugliness’ into its imagery, seeking to reassess the significance of ‘ugly’ images within contemporary art photography by the philosophical perspectives of Georges Bataille, Julia Kristeva, and Roland Barthes’ photographic theory. Both Bataille and Kristeva draw attention to aspects of existence and humanity that have been disregarded or deemed inappropriate within the confines of the social order. Within this order, individuals who have long excluded the ‘other’ find themselves confronting the ‘other’ and thereby reaffirming their lost humanity. And individuals reclaim imaginary elements that have been excluded from the symbolic order by transgressing the established order. The recovery of the non-linguistic world resonates with Bataille''s Formless and Kristeva’s semiotic Chora, linking the appropriation of the ugliness in art to its concrete practice. The emotional turbulence evoked by the presentation of Formless images and Chora leads to the concept of ‘Punctum’ articulated by Barthes. Focusing on contemporary art photography actively incorporating ‘ugliness’, this study confines its scope to the works created between the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It analyzes these works through the lens of Bataille and Kristeva’s theories, extending their implications to Barthes’ theory. The portrayal of ‘Other-Taboo’ prompts viewers to acknowledge both the marginalized ‘other’ and their own otherness, suggesting the potential for transgressive reasoning. This interpretation revealed that within photographs, ‘Punctum’ intensifies emotion triggered by the ‘other’, expanding into the viewer’s inner realm, leading to expansion of the human being, elucidating the phiosophical signifiance of the image of ugliness in contemporary art photography.
