The purpose of this study is to analyze the cases of existing urban railway spaces and the characteristics of passengers to suggest space design for a better movement environment in both high congestion and under-utilized time. As a means of transportation that can efficiently transport the largest number of people, the urban railway plays the most important role in the mobility of urban citizens. However, the level of congestion during rush hour pushes the limit, and the danger has only recently been attracting attention. In fact, during commuting hours, the number of people exceeding the riding capacity is boarding the train, and the risk cannot be ignored, and the travel experience in an excessively dense environment needs to be improved. For the study, related preceding studies were analyzed and considered, and improvement items and methods were derived based on the acquired data, and design shaping that satisfies the improvement plan was proposed, focusing on seating and arrangement. As a way to increase the convenience of urban railways and improve the experience of using urban railways during congestion, three goals were set: ‘improving seat comfort’, ‘expanding seating opportunities’, and ‘improvement of congestion’. The study results are as follows. First of all, unnecessary contact between passengers was reduced and improved by proposing a seat molding method that increases the seat width for seat convenience and at the same time arranges it diagonally. In addition, while borrowing the advantages of the existing center seat arrangement, a design that can improve the degree of congestion while increasing seating opportunities by adding seats by utilizing foldable variable seats that can compensate for the disadvantages was proposed. Through mock-up experiments and usability evaluation of urban railway users, it was verified that problems can be improved through modeling. The intended formative function was actually satisfied, and not only was the satisfaction high in usability, but it is also considered that problems such as safety accidents and delays in urban railways could be solved as the existing standing space could be used more comfortably during rush hours.
